      DESCRIPTION

The Red Eye High Fin Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri), also known as the High Fin Swordtail or simply Swordtail, is a striking freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and unique tail shape. This beautiful species is characterized by its elongated body, bright red or orange coloration, and the distinctive high fin that gives it a graceful silhouette. The Red Eye High Fin Swordtail can grow up to 4–6 inches in length and is a popular choice among aquarists for its captivating appearance and active nature. Native to the freshwater rivers and streams of Central America, these fish are perfect for community aquariums, adding a splash of color and movement to any setup.

Red Eye High Fin Swordtail Care Guide
Red Eye High Fin Swordtails are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space for these active fish. They thrive in water temperatures ranging from 72°F to 82°F and prefer a slightly alkaline pH between 7.0 and 8.5. As livebearers, they are relatively easy to breed in captivity, and proper care is essential to maintain their health and vibrant colors.

Ideal Tank Setup for Red Eye High Fin Swordtail
To create an ideal environment for Red Eye High Fin Swordtails, provide a well-planted tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. Incorporating live plants like java fern, hornwort, and floating plants helps mimic their natural habitat while offering shelter and reducing stress. Swordtails are not particularly picky about water conditions, but good filtration and regular water changes are important to maintain water quality. A secure tank lid is recommended, as they can jump if startled.

      Diet and Feeding
Red Eye High Fin Swordtails are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet. High-quality flakes or pellets should form the foundation of their diet, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Offering a balanced diet rich in both plant and protein sources helps enhance their colors and overall health. Feeding them small portions two to three times a day ensures they receive proper nutrition without overloading the tank with uneaten food.

Compatible Tank Mates for Red Eye High Fin Swordtail
These swordtails are generally peaceful and do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Ideal tank mates include tetras, guppies, danios, and small catfish like Corydoras. They can also be kept with other livebearers, but it’s important to maintain a balanced male-to-female ratio to prevent aggressive behavior among males. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive fish, as this can cause stress and fin damage.

      Lifespan and Health
With proper care, Red Eye High Fin Swordtails can live for 3 to 5 years. Maintaining a clean tank environment through regular water changes of about 25% weekly and monitoring water parameters will help keep them healthy. Keeping an eye out for signs of stress or illness, such as lethargy or changes in coloration, is essential for early detection and treatment.

The Red Eye High Fin Swordtail is a captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium, combining beauty and lively behavior in one stunning package. With their vibrant colors, active swimming style, and peaceful temperament, these fish make an excellent choice for community tanks, bringing joy and color to any aquatic setup. Whether you’re a seasoned aquarist or just starting out, the Red Eye High Fin Swordtail is sure to enhance your aquarium experience.
