The L155 Black Adonis Pleco (Acanthicus adonis), commonly known as the Adonis Pleco, is a large and striking pleco species known for its dark coloration and intricate white spots that gradually reduce in number as it matures. This pleco originates from the rivers of South America, including parts of the Amazon Basin. When young, the Black Adonis Pleco displays a stunning pattern of white spots on a dark background, which fades into a nearly solid black as the fish grows. Reaching an impressive size of up to 24 inches in captivity, this pleco is suited for very large aquariums and makes a bold statement as a centerpiece fish.
Due to its potential size, the Black Adonis Pleco requires a spacious tank—at least 180 gallons for adult specimens. These plecos thrive in water temperatures between 75°F and 82°F with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Strong filtration is essential to handle their considerable waste output, along with a powerful water current to simulate their native fast-flowing rivers. Weekly water changes of about 20-30% help keep water parameters stable and maintain high water quality.
To replicate their natural habitat, provide ample hiding spots, using large pieces of driftwood, rock caves, and hollow structures. Smooth sand or gravel is recommended as a substrate to protect their undersides. This nocturnal species appreciates lower light levels and shaded areas in the tank where it can retreat during the day. Secure any decorations, as these plecos are strong and may move items around while foraging or digging.
The Black Adonis Pleco is an omnivore with a preference for a diet rich in protein. A balanced diet includes sinking carnivore pellets or algae wafers, with regular supplements of protein-rich foods like shrimp, mussels, bloodworms, and earthworms. They may also nibble on blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, though they primarily require a high-protein diet. Feeding once or twice daily is ideal, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding.
While relatively peaceful, the Black Adonis Pleco can be territorial, particularly with other bottom-dwelling fish. Ideal tank mates include robust, semi-aggressive species that can coexist without competition, such as large cichlids, Silver Dollars, and other similarly sized fish. Avoid pairing them with smaller or delicate fish, as these could be stressed or intimidated. Multiple Black Adonis Plecos can coexist if the tank is spacious enough, with plenty of territories and hiding spots.
With proper care, the Black Adonis Pleco can live for 15 years or more. Regular tank maintenance, clean water, and a balanced diet are essential to keeping this pleco healthy. While generally hardy, they can be susceptible to stress in suboptimal water conditions, so routine monitoring and upkeep are crucial for their well-being.
The Black Adonis Pleco is a truly impressive fish that adds unique beauty and presence to any large aquarium. With its intricate spotting, powerful build, and commanding size, it’s a rewarding choice for experienced aquarists looking for a one-of-a-kind centerpiece fish. Properly cared for, the Black Adonis Pleco can provide years of fascination and enjoyment in a well-maintained, spacious setup.
