The Flagtail Prochilodus (Semaprochilodus taeniurus) is a striking freshwater species native to the rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins. It is admired for its distinctive appearance, particularly the vibrant, flag-like tail that gives the species its common name. The Flagtail Prochilodus is an active swimmer and a peaceful, social fish, making it a great addition to large community tanks. This species, known for its colorful tail, is sure to attract attention with its shimmering, elongated body and unique swimming behavior.
The Flagtail Prochilodus is best suited for larger aquariums due to its size and active swimming behavior. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended for a small group, though a 100-gallon tank or larger is ideal to allow them ample swimming space and room for natural behaviors. These fish can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length, so providing a spacious environment is essential for their health and well-being.
The Flagtail Prochilodus prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 and a temperature range of 74°F to 82°F (23°C to 28°C). They thrive in water that is well-oxygenated, and a strong filtration system is necessary to maintain good water quality. Regular water changes (20-30% per week) are important to maintain stable water conditions, as poor water quality can lead to stress and disease.
For an ideal Flagtail Prochilodus tank setup, provide a spacious, well-planted aquarium with plenty of open swimming space. These fish enjoy moderate water flow, which mimics the current of their native rivers. The addition of live plants such as Java Fern, Amazon Sword, or Anubias will not only provide natural shelter but also oxygenate the water. Driftwood and smooth rocks can also be added for decoration and provide hiding spots.
The substrate should consist of smooth gravel or sand to avoid damaging their delicate bodies. Avoid sharp or rough substrates that could cause injury during their active swimming.
The Flagtail Prochilodus is omnivorous and feeds on a variety of plant and animal-based foods. In the wild, they primarily forage for detritus, algae, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality omnivore pellets or sinking wafers. They also enjoy live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and earthworms.
Additionally, offering plant-based foods such as blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and peas will provide necessary fiber and nutrients. Feeding them once or twice a day, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes, will prevent overfeeding and keep the water clean.
The Flagtail Prochilodus is a peaceful and social fish, and they do best in schools of at least 5-6 individuals. They are not aggressive and generally do well with other peaceful, mid- to large-sized species. Ideal tank mates include other peaceful fish like larger tetras, rainbowfish, peaceful cichlids, and catfish species such as Corydoras and Plecos.
Because they are social, it’s recommended to keep them with their own species in a group. They can be kept in community tanks with similar-sized peaceful fish but should be avoided with aggressive or territorial species that may stress them.
With proper care, the Flagtail Prochilodus can live for 8 to 12 years or more. They are hardy, but like all fish, they are sensitive to water quality and can be prone to common freshwater diseases such as ich, fin rot, and fungal infections. Ensuring good water quality, regular maintenance, and a varied diet are crucial for their long-term health.
Routine water changes, filter maintenance, and water testing are essential to maintaining stable and healthy conditions for the Flagtail Prochilodus. Keeping their tank clean and providing a balanced diet will help prevent stress and illness.
The Flagtail Prochilodus (Semaprochilodus taeniurus) is a beautiful and dynamic species that makes an excellent addition to larger, peaceful community aquariums. With their active swimming behavior, vibrant coloration, and peaceful nature, these fish are sure to bring life and movement to your tank. By providing them with the appropriate tank size, clean water, and a varied diet, you can enjoy these stunning fish for many years. Their social nature and colorful tail make them a true centerpiece in any aquarium setup.
