Dalmatian Molly Fish – Stylish, Hardy, and Perfect for Community Aquariums

    Overview
The Dalmatian Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a striking livebearer known for its unique black-and-white spotted coloration, resembling the classic Dalmatian dog. Hardy, active, and easy to care for, this beautiful molly is ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Dalmatian Mollies add lively movement and a splash of contrast to freshwater tanks and are often favored for their peaceful temperament and low-maintenance needs.

These fish are also livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming fry, which can be a fascinating experience for aquarists interested in breeding.

    Care Requirements

    • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons

    • Water Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

    • pH Range: 7.0–8.5

    • Water Hardness: Moderate to hard (10–25 dGH)

    • Temperament: Peaceful and active; slightly territorial males

    • Tank Setup: Dalmatian Mollies thrive in planted tanks with open swimming areas. Add rocks or décor to provide hiding places. While not essential, a small amount of aquarium salt is often appreciated.

    • Staple Foods: High-quality flakes or pellets formulated for livebearers

    • Supplements: Blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or peas

    • Protein Boost: Frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

    • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times per day in small portions

    Ideal Tank Mates
Dalmatian Mollies are peaceful community fish that get along with a wide variety of tank mates:
