      DESCRIPTION

The Colombian Tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus) is a lively, striking freshwater fish, known for its vibrant colors and active behavior. Native to rivers and streams in Colombia, this fish features a brilliant silver body with a hint of blue, paired with striking red fins that add a beautiful contrast. Colombian Tetras typically grow up to 2.5 inches, making them an ideal choice for mid-sized community tanks. With their energetic swimming and schooling nature, these tetras create a dynamic display, bringing movement and color to any aquarium setup.

      Colombian Tetra Care Guide
Colombian Tetras are hardy and adapt well to a range of tank conditions, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks provide ample swimming space and allow for a healthy school of 6 or more fish, which helps reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors. Colombian Tetras thrive in water temperatures between 72°F and 82°F, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5, and benefit from clean, stable water conditions.

Ideal Tank Setup for Colombian Tetra
Colombian Tetras come from river environments with moderate water flow, so they enjoy tanks with a gentle to moderate current and open swimming areas. While they are highly active, they also appreciate having shaded hiding spots, so a tank with live or artificial plants, driftwood, and rocks will provide comfort and replicate their natural habitat. Soft to moderate lighting enhances their color, especially in well-planted tanks, as it mimics the dappled light of their natural river environment.

      Diet and Feeding
Colombian Tetras are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet that includes high-quality tropical flakes or pellets, as well as live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. These protein-rich treats help bring out their vivid colors and maintain their health. Feed them twice a day in portions small enough for them to consume in a few minutes, which helps maintain water quality.

Compatible Tank Mates for Colombian Tetra
Known for their peaceful but energetic nature, Colombian Tetras do well with a variety of tank mates. Suitable companions include other peaceful fish such as Corydoras catfish, rasboras, danios, and other tetras. Colombian Tetras do best in a community of similarly sized, calm fish, but they should not be paired with larger, aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this may lead to stress or fin damage. They also prefer the company of their own kind, so keeping them in groups of at least six helps them feel secure and reduces aggressive tendencies.

      Lifespan and Health
With proper care, Colombian Tetras can live up to 3–5 years. Regular tank maintenance, including 25% water changes weekly, helps keep them healthy and reduces the risk of common freshwater ailments. Keeping a close eye on water parameters and observing for signs of stress or disease are key to maintaining their health and vibrancy.

The Colombian Tetra is a lively, beautiful fish that adds a splash of color and movement to community tanks. With its stunning red fins and playful nature, this tetra is a wonderful choice for aquarists seeking an easy-to-care-for fish with high visual appeal and activity. Whether you’re setting up a peaceful community tank or a vibrant school of tetras, Colombian Tetras are sure to bring energy and color to your aquarium setup.
