      DESCRIPTION

The Black Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) is a popular freshwater fish renowned for its striking appearance and lively demeanor. This small, schooling fish typically reaches about 2 to 3 inches in length and is characterized by its sleek, silvery body adorned with prominent black fins and a distinctive black skirt that extends from its pelvic fins. Native to the rivers of South America, particularly in Brazil and Paraguay, the Black Skirt Tetra adds both elegance and energy to any community aquarium, making it a favorite among fish enthusiasts.

      Black Skirt Tetra Care Guide
Black Skirt Tetras are hardy and adaptable, making them ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They thrive best in groups of six or more, as their schooling behavior helps reduce stress and encourages natural interactions. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space. They prefer a water temperature range of 72°F to 82°F and a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Maintaining stable water conditions is crucial for their health and well-being.

Ideal Tank Setup for Black Skirt Tetra
Creating a suitable environment for Black Skirt Tetras involves replicating their natural habitat with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. Incorporating live plants, driftwood, and rocks creates structure and provides shelter, while soft lighting helps enhance their colors. These tetras enjoy a well-filtered tank with gentle water flow, as they are typically found in slow-moving waters in the wild. A secure lid is essential, as they can be prone to jumping if startled.

      Diet and Feeding
As omnivores, Black Skirt Tetras have a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, as well as live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Providing a balanced diet with both plant-based and protein-rich foods ensures their vibrant coloration and overall health. It’s best to feed them small amounts two to three times a day, ensuring they consume the food within a few minutes to help maintain water quality.

Compatible Tank Mates for Black Skirt Tetra
Black Skirt Tetras are peaceful fish that do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Ideal tank mates include rasboras, danios, and other small tetras, as well as bottom-dwelling fish like Corydoras catfish. It’s essential to avoid pairing them with larger or aggressive fish that may intimidate them or nip at their fins. Keeping them in a school helps to foster a harmonious community, as they thrive in the company of their own kind.

      Lifespan and Health
With proper care, Black Skirt Tetras can live for 3 to 5 years. Regular water changes of 25% weekly, along with monitoring water parameters, are crucial for keeping them healthy and preventing common fish diseases. Observing for signs of stress or illness, such as changes in behavior or appearance, allows for early intervention and treatment.

The Black Skirt Tetra is a delightful addition to any aquarium, bringing both charm and activity to the tank. Their striking appearance and peaceful nature make them a perfect choice for community setups, where they can thrive in the company of other friendly fish. Whether you're an experienced aquarist or just starting, Black Skirt Tetras are sure to add life and color to your freshwater aquarium.
