The Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya), sometimes also referred to as the Red Barb, is a popular and colorful freshwater fish species known for its vibrant coloration and peaceful demeanor. These small and attractive fish are commonly kept in community aquariums. Here's some information about the Cherry Barb:
Appearance: Cherry Barbs have a brilliant red coloration that gives them their common name. Males are often more intensely colored, displaying vibrant red hues. Females tend to be less colorful and may have a more orange or brownish tint. They have a streamlined body shape and a forked tail fin.
Size: These barbs are relatively small, typically growing to around 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm) in length.
Behavior: Cherry Barbs are generally peaceful fish that can be kept in community tanks. They are social and should be kept in groups of at least six to reduce stress.
Tank Setup: Provide a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas and hiding spots created by plants, rocks, and decorations. Cherry Barbs appreciate a natural-looking environment with plenty of cover.
Water Conditions: Maintain good water quality with a pH range of around 6.0 to 7.5 and a temperature between 73 to 79°F (23 to 26°C). Regular water changes and proper filtration are important.
Diet: Cherry Barbs are omnivores. Offer them a balanced diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia, and occasional vegetable matter.
Compatibility: Cherry Barbs are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, peaceful fish. Avoid keeping them with larger or more aggressive tankmates that might stress them.
Tank Size: A tank size of around 20 to 30 gallons or more is suitable for a group of Cherry Barbs.
Breeding: Breeding Cherry Barbs is possible in a well-maintained aquarium. Provide them with suitable plants for egg-laying and maintain stable water conditions. Spawning mops can also be used to collect the eggs.
Cherry Barbs are known for their active behavior and attractive coloration, making them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarium keepers. Keeping them in a group and providing them with appropriate care and an enriched environment will contribute to their well-being and overall enjoyment in the aquarium.
