    DESCRIPTION

The L067 Yellow Seam Pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus) is a stunning and highly sought-after species within the Baryancistrus genus. Native to the rivers and tributaries of Brazil, specifically the Rio Xingu in the Amazon Basin, the L067 is known for its striking yellow markings along its fins, which stand out against its dark, almost black body. These vivid yellow "seams" that run along the edges of its fins and tail give it its common name. This pleco is a beautiful and relatively peaceful species, making it a desirable addition to larger aquariums, where it can thrive and show off its impressive colors. It typically grows to about 6-8 inches in length in captivity, making it a manageable size for many aquarists, though it still requires a spacious tank with good filtration.

L067 Yellow Seam Pleco Care Guide

The L067 Yellow Seam Pleco is a hardy species but does require specific water conditions to thrive. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space for this pleco, particularly as it grows and becomes more active. This species prefers warm water, with a temperature range of 75°F to 86°F, and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5 to 7.5). Strong filtration is crucial, as plecos are heavy waste producers, and maintaining good water quality is essential for their health. Weekly water changes of 20-30% are recommended to help maintain the ideal water parameters.

Ideal Tank Setup for L067 Yellow Seam Pleco

To replicate the pleco's natural environment, it is important to provide an aquarium that mimics the fast-moving, well-oxygenated waters of the Rio Xingu. The tank should have plenty of hiding spots for the pleco to retreat to, especially since it is a nocturnal species. Large pieces of driftwood, caves, and rock structures are perfect for providing shelter. A fine gravel or sandy substrate is ideal, as it won’t harm their delicate undersides, and they will enjoy foraging for food along the bottom of the tank.

As the L067 prefers moving water, a moderate to strong water flow created by a high-quality filtration system or circulation pump will help mimic its natural river habitat. Additionally, dim lighting or shaded areas in the tank will provide the pleco with areas to rest during the day.

    Diet and Feeding

The L067 Yellow Seam Pleco is omnivorous and will thrive on a varied diet that includes both plant and protein-based foods. High-quality sinking pellets or wafers formulated for omnivores or herbivores should be their staple diet. In addition, fresh or blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or cucumber should be offered regularly. Protein-rich foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small pieces of shrimp can be given as occasional treats.

It is important to feed the L067 once or twice a day, offering only as much food as the pleco can consume in a few minutes. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water contamination and ensure that the pleco receives a balanced diet.

Compatible Tank Mates for L067 Yellow Seam Pleco

The L067 Yellow Seam Pleco is generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive, medium to large fish. Ideal tank mates include larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, and other non-territorial catfish. It is important to avoid housing them with small or overly territorial fish, as these could stress or bully the pleco. Multiple plecos can be kept together as long as there are enough hiding spots and territories within the tank to prevent territorial disputes.

    Lifespan and Health

With proper care, the L067 Yellow Seam Pleco can live for 10-12 years or more. Regular maintenance of water quality, a varied diet, and stable tank conditions are crucial to keeping this species healthy. Like most plecos, it is sensitive to poor water conditions, so water testing and tank cleaning should be done regularly to prevent issues such as fungal infections or parasites.

The L067 Yellow Seam Pleco is a beautiful and unique species that adds a touch of vibrancy and elegance to any large freshwater aquarium. Its stunning yellow fins, peaceful nature, and manageable size make it an excellent choice for experienced aquarists who can provide the proper care and environment. If given the right tank setup and diet, the L067 will thrive and be a striking centerpiece in your aquarium for many years to come.
