Skunk Corydoras – Striking and Social Bottom Dweller for Freshwater Aquariums

    Overview
The Skunk Corydoras (Corydoras arcuatus) is a unique and eye-catching freshwater catfish known for the bold black stripe that runs along its back—resembling a skunk’s pattern. Peaceful, active, and social, this Corydoras species is a favorite among aquarists who want a distinctive bottom dweller that gets along well in community tanks.

Native to the Amazon River Basin, Skunk Corys thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water and love to explore the bottom in groups. Their active foraging behavior and hardy nature make them ideal for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.

    Care Requirements

    • Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons

    • Water Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)

    • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

    • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–15 dGH)

    • Temperament: Very peaceful and shy unless kept in groups

    • Tank Setup: Use a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect their barbels. Include driftwood, caves, and plants for cover, plus plenty of open space for bottom roaming. Keep in groups of 4–6+ for best behavior and reduced stress.

    Diet
Skunk Corydoras are omnivorous scavengers with a preference for sinking foods:

    • Staple Foods: Sinking catfish pellets and bottom feeder wafers

    • Supplements: Frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia

    • Vegetables: Occasional blanched spinach or zucchini

    • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times daily; feed only what they can eat within a few minutes

    Ideal Tank Mates
Skunk Corys do very well with peaceful tank mates that occupy other areas of the tank. Suitable companions include:

    • Tetras (e.g., Ember, Neon, Rummy Nose)

    • Rasboras

    • Guppies and Mollies

    • Dwarf Gouramis

    • Other Corydoras species

    • Shrimp and snails
Avoid aggressive species or large fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.

    Lifespan
Skunk Corydoras can live 5–7 years with proper care and stable water conditions.
