    DESCRIPTION

The Calvus Cichlid (Altolamprologus calvus) is a captivating cichlid species native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for its distinctive appearance, intriguing behavior, and fascinating social dynamics, the Calvus Cichlid is a popular choice among experienced aquarium enthusiasts who appreciate the diversity of Tanganyikan cichlids.

Here's more information about the Calvus Cichlid:

    1. Coloration: Calvus Cichlids have a unique appearance characterized by a laterally compressed body, a high forehead, and a spiky or frilly dorsal fin. They come in various color morphs, including black, white, or a combination of both, with variations in pattern and intensity.

    2. Size: These cichlids can grow to be around 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length.

    3. Habitat: In their natural habitat of Lake Tanganyika, Calvus Cichlids are found in rocky areas along the substrate, often seeking shelter in crevices or caves.

    4. Behavior: Calvus Cichlids are known for their intricate behaviors and social hierarchy. They are territorial and may exhibit dominance behaviors, especially during breeding.

    5. Tank Setup: Provide a setup with rocky formations, caves, and crevices to mimic their natural habitat. Calvus Cichlids are cavity spawners, so provide hiding spots for breeding and for individuals seeking shelter.

    6. Water Conditions: Calvus Cichlids prefer water with a pH range of 7.8 to 9.0 and a temperature range of 74 to 82°F (23 to 28°C). Maintaining stable water parameters is important.

    7. Diet: Offer high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or small fish.

    8. Compatibility: When selecting tankmates, consider other peaceful Tanganyikan cichlids with similar water and habitat requirements. Avoid overly aggressive or territorial species.

    9. Breeding: Breeding Calvus Cichlids can be rewarding but can also present challenges due to their complex behaviors. Provide plenty of hiding spots for females to lay eggs and protect their fry.

The Calvus Cichlid's unique appearance and behavior make it an attractive and intriguing addition to a Tanganyikan cichlid aquarium. As with any cichlid species, it's important to provide proper care, suitable tankmates, and attention to their social dynamics to ensure their well-being and allow you to observe their natural behaviors in the aquarium.
